R Sivabhogam had become India's first female chartered accountant

R. Sivabhogam is the first woman chartered accountant of India. Today i.e. on 23 July, R. Shivbhogam is celebrating her birthday. Sivabhogam studied in Lady Wellington School Chennai. Sister Subbalakshmi was a student in the field of social service. She graduated from The Queen Mary College Chennai. She participated in the non-cooperation movement started by Mahatma Gandhi and remained in jail for 1 year. After her release, Sivabhogam made up her mind to get a government diploma. For which she registered for accountancy and made history by becoming the first Indian female accountant in 1933. With the help of Mr CS Shastri, she underwent training.

Apart from this, Sivabhogam started her independent practice soon after her training. The reason for this was the new law of the British Government, under which the people who were sentenced to imprisonment, prohibited them from registering themselves as accountants. Sivabhogam filed a writ petition to repeal such act and a decision came in her favour.

Sivabhogam started her independent practice in 1937. Sivabhogam was nominated as a member on the formation of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) in 1949. Sivabhogam became the head of the Southern India Regional Council (SIRC) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. She became the only woman in the then Madras Council of India to hold this post for three consecutive years from 1955 to 1958. She was also a Senate member of Madras University.
