Rabi sowing in progress, wheat and oilseeds leading the way

New Delhi, India: According to data from the Union Agriculture Ministry, the sowing area under wheat is about eight lakh hectares (ha) higher than it was at the same time in 2020, and the total sowing area is 260 lakh ha, up from 239.33 lakh ha at the same time in 2020.

Wheat is planted on 88.46 lakh ha, up from 80.71 lakh ha in 2020; rice is planted on 6.33 lakh ha, up from 42.51 lakh ha in 2020; and pulses are planted on 76.12 lakh ha, practically identical to 76.19 lakh ha in 2020.

In 2021, the area seeded for coarse-cum-nutri crops is 20.48 lakh ha, down from 22.08 lakh ha in 2020, while the area sown for oil seeds is 69.26 lakh ha, up from 53.28 lakh ha in 2020.

According to data from the Department of Economics and Statistics (DES), the area sown for rapeseed and mustard is 65.21 lakh ha, up from 49.98 lakh ha in 2020 and even more than 61.55 lakh ha of average sowing area.
