SRINAGAR: Three days after two other radical clerics were detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA), police in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district detained another radical religious preacher Sarjan Barkati on Saturday, September 17. Family members of Barkati told the media that he was taken into custody early on Saturday morning and that they were informed he had been booked under the Public Safety Act. Barkati was known as 'Freedom Chacha' because of preaching anti-national and pro-terrorist speeches in the wake of the killing of Hizbul poster boy Burhan Wani in July 2016. After being imprisoned under the Public Safety Act for four years, the preacher was recently freed. Earlier, two other radical clerics, Mushtaq Ahmad Veeri and Abdul Rashid Dawoodi were booked and arrested under the PSA by police. According to intelligence authorities, these extremist preachers have attempted to incite adolescents to use violence by stirring up feelings against the government and in support of terrorism. An intelligence officer here claimed that "speeches delivered by these clerics occasionally stand witness to their anti-India and pro-terrorist preachings."
