New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi expressed his condolences for the deaths of three students who died due to basement flooding at a coaching centre in Delhi's Old Rajinder Nagar on Sunday. In a post on X, Gandhi described the incident as a "combined system failure," highlighting the tragic circumstances. "The death of competitive exam students due to waterlogging in the basement of a building in Delhi is very unfortunate. A few days ago, a student died due to electric shock during the rains. I express my heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families," Rahul Gandhi said in his post. He attributed the incident to systemic issues, stating, "This collapse of infrastructure is a combined system failure. The common citizen is paying the price of unsafe construction, poor town planning, and the irresponsibility of institutions at every level by losing his life." Gandhi emphasized that a safe and comfortable life is the right of every citizen and the responsibility of the government. Congress leader Pawan Khera termed the tragedy "man-made" and raised questions about the legality of the coaching centre's operations. "It is not a natural disaster. How was a coaching centre running in the basement? Did they have licenses? Did they have all the papers from MCD? We have not got answers to these questions. It is very easy to question each other and make allegations and counter-allegations, but the common man is suffering in this. Such an insensitive government in the national capital is extremely wrong, be it MCD or the government," Khera said while speaking to ANI. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi called the incident "the height of negligence and mismanagement." In a post on X, she expressed her sorrow and frustration. "The incident of the death of three students due to waterlogging in the basement of a coaching institute in Delhi is heartbreaking. I pray to God for the departed souls and the bereaved families. Recently, a student died due to electric shock in Patel Nagar. It is the height of negligence and mismanagement that the lives of children who come here from far-off places to fulfill their dreams are being snatched away from them," she wrote. Delhi police on Sunday arrested two individuals, the owner and coordinator of the IAS coaching centre, where the basement flooding due to rains resulted in the deaths of three students. The victims have been identified as Shreya Yadav from Ambedkar Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nivin Dalwin from Ernakulam, Kerala. This tragic incident follows closely on the heels of another, where a UPSC aspirant was electrocuted on a waterlogged street in the national capital.
