MUMBAI: Flight operations at Mumbai's airport faced severe disruptions on Monday (July 8) due to heavy rains and low visibility. The runway operations were suspended for over an hour, resulting in the cancellation of 50 flights and the diversion of 27 others.
According to reports, Mumbai airport witnessed the cancellation of 50 flights by 11 am on Monday due to poor visibility and heavy rainfall. IndiGo was the most affected, with 42 flights cancelled, including 20 departures. Air India also had to cancel six flights, three of which were arrivals.
IndiGo and Air India were not alone in the impact; Alliance Air, a government-owned airline, had to cancel two flights—one departure and one arrival.
During the suspension of runway operations from 2:22 am to 3:40 am, 27 flights bound for Mumbai were diverted to nearby airports such as Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Indore.
The rainfall in Mumbai over the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Monday was substantial. The island city received an average of 115.63 mm of rainfall, with eastern and western parts recording 168.68 mm and 165.93 mm, respectively.
In specific areas, the rainfall was even more intense. Govandi in eastern Mumbai recorded the highest rainfall at 315.6 mm, followed closely by Powai at 314.5 mm. In western Mumbai, Malpa Dongri in Andheri received 292.2 mm, and Chakala received 278.2 mm. Pratiksha Nagar in the island city recorded 220.2 mm, while Sewri Koliwada received 185.8 mm, according to official reports.
