In a major advancement for India’s border infrastructure, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated 75 projects under the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), amounting to Rs.2,236 crore. This initiative encompasses 22 roads, 51 bridges, and two additional works across 11 states and union territories, enhancing India’s defense capabilities and promoting socio-economic growth in border areas.
The inauguration took place virtually from the Trishakti Corps Headquarters in Sukna, West Bengal, with a key focus on the Kupup-Sherathang Road in Sikkim. This new road connects Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg and the Zuluk axis, significantly improving connectivity in the strategically important region.
In his address, Rajnath Singh commended the BRO for its commitment to completing these projects in challenging terrains and difficult weather conditions. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to bolstering the nation’s defense and border infrastructure, emphasizing that these projects align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat by 2047.’
With these 75 new projects, the BRO has reached a remarkable total of 111 infrastructure initiatives in 2024, at an overall cost of Rs.3,751 crore. This includes the cutting-edge Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh, which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister earlier this year. In the previous year, the BRO dedicated 125 projects worth Rs.3,611 crore.
Singh highlighted the government’s commitment to border development, noting a significant change in strategy since 2014. Previously cautious about developing border regions due to potential threats, the current approach prioritizes infrastructure enhancement, particularly in the North-East. He expressed optimism that the increased allocation of Rs.6,500 crore for the BRO in the Union Budget 2024-25 would further expedite strategic infrastructure development and stimulate socio-economic progress.
He assured that India is on the path to becoming one of the safest and strongest nations globally, supported by these advancements in border infrastructure.
The event was attended by important military and government officials, including Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, alongside Chief Ministers and Governors from various states, who participated both in person and virtually.
