Raja Ram Mohan Roy Birth Anniversary! Man who is considered as Father of Bengal Renaissance

Someone who quit his job as an East India Company and threw himself into the national society. Yes! We are talking about 'Raja Ram Mohan' Indian religious, social, and educational reformer who challenged traditional Hindu culture and indicated lines of progress for Indian society under British rule. He is sometimes called the father of modern India.

Raja Ram Mohan, who helped Indians develop good thoughts, was born on May 22, 1772. He had led his contribution to make India modern. King Rammohan Roy was born in Bengal to a Brahmin family. He was the founder of the Brahma Samaj. At the same time, he was the father of the social reform era. From the age of 15, he had attained knowledge of Bengali, Sanskrit, Arabic and Persian.

He also worked in 'Brahmamechanical Magazine', 'Samvad Kaumudi' in the early stages of his career. All his life was spent struggling for the rights of women. They had a different place in their chests towards women. Raja Ram Mohan Roy realised the pain towards women when he saw his own sister-in-law getting sati in his own house. Ram Mohan never thought that the sati system that he was opposing and wanted to eradicate from the society would be accepted by his sister-in-law. Raja Ram Mohan Roy had gone abroad for some work and in the meantime his brother died. After that, the contractors of the society burnt his sister-in-law alive in the name of Sati system.

Thereafter, Mohan Roy intensified his agitation against Sati Pratha. After the sister-in-law's sacrifice, she was determined not to allow this to happen to any woman now. He enacted a law against the practice of Sati in 1929 with the help of Governor General Lord William Bentinck against the evils of society. Mohan Roy was also opposed to idolatry. But there was a turning point in life when he wanted to become a monk himself, but his mother stopped him. Ram Mohan Roy was married thrice which led to him being called a polygamist in the society. He gave momentum to both the indian freedom struggle and the efficient combination of journalism.
