The completion of Ramadan and the start of Shawwal, the tenth month in the Islamic calendar, are marked by Eid ul Fitr. Since the moon's observation is necessary for concluding Ramadan and celebrating Eid, it is observed in different regions on various days, typically with a one-day variation. Lunar months are either 29 or 30 days long, hence Muslims generally have to wait until the night before Eid to confirm its date. For countries that began Ramadan on March 24, local moon sighters will scan the horizon after sunset on April 21, to search for the crescent moon.
