Remembering Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj: A Tribute to the Maratha Warrior

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Death Anniversary: Everything You Need to Know About the Maratha Warrior -Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the revered Maratha king, was born on February 19, 1630, at Shivneri Fort near Junnar in Pune district.

Shivaji Maharaj embarked on the mission of establishing Swaraj. His vision for Swaraj was clearly depicted in his official seal, written in Sanskrit. Through this seal, he assured his people that the kingdom of Shivaji, son of Shahaji, would always prioritize the welfare of its citizens, symbolized by the ever-expanding crescent moon.

He captured strategic forts like Murumbdev (Rajgad), Torna, Kondhana, and Purandar, laying the groundwork for Swaraj. Shivaji Maharaj steadily expanded and consolidated his power, demonstrating both determination and caution.

In 1656, Shivaji Maharaj seized Javali in Satara district, a significant move from a strategic standpoint. Later, he transformed Rairi into Raigad, establishing it as his capital.

His conquests extended to forts such as Mahuli, Lohagad, Tunga, Tikona, Visapur, Songad, Karnala, Tala, and Ghosala in the Konkan region.

In 1672, his army conquered the principality of Jawhar and Ramnagar.

Shivaji Maharaj also recognized the importance of maritime security, establishing the Maratha Navy to safeguard merchant ships and ports, thereby bolstering revenue from maritime trade and customs duties.

On June 6, 1674, Shivaji Maharaj was coronated at Raigad by Gagabhatt, a learned pandit from Benaras. He ascended as the Chhatrapati of Swaraj. To commemorate the occasion, special coins were minted - a gold coin called hon and a copper coin called shivrai, bearing the inscription "Shri Raja Shivachhatrapati."

He prioritized agricultural development and the welfare of the peasantry while also promoting trade and protecting industries.

Today, as we commemorate the death anniversary of this great Maratha warrior, let us remember his enduring legacy and contributions to the nation.
