New Delhi: In 2021, a total of 461,312 road accidents were reported in India, resulting in 168,491 fatalities and 443,366 injuries, according to a recent report released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). The report, titled 'Road Accidents in India - 2022,' highlights an 11.9% year-on-year increase in accidents and a 9.4% rise in the number of fatalities. Furthermore, there was a 15.3% surge in the number of individuals injured in road accidents during 2022. The report provides a breakdown of accidents by the type of road on which they occurred. In 2022, out of the total accidents, 32.9% (151,997 accidents) took place on national highways (NH) and expressways, 23.1% (106,682 accidents) on state highways (SH), and the remaining 43.9% (202,633 accidents) on other roads. Regarding the distribution of fatalities, out of the total 168,491 reported in 2022, 36.2% (61,038 fatalities) occurred on national highways, 24.3% (41,012 fatalities) on state highways, and 39.4% (66,441 fatalities) on other roads. The data in this annual report is sourced from state and union territory police departments and is presented on a calendar year basis using standardized formats as recommended by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) under the Asia Pacific Road Accident Data (APRAD) base project.
