Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to visit India, marking his first trip to the country since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began in 2022. Dmitry Peskov, Putin's press secretary, confirmed the visit on Tuesday, although the exact dates have not yet been revealed.
Peskov mentioned, “Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit India soon. We are working on the dates.” This visit will be Putin’s first since December 2021, when he traveled to New Delhi for the 21st India-Russia Annual Summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
If the visit occurs in 2024, it would be Putin’s third face-to-face meeting with Modi. Peskov expressed hope that the dates would soon be finalized, noting that after Modi’s two visits to Russia, the Russian President’s visit to India was eagerly anticipated.
Earlier this year, Prime Minister Modi traveled to Russia on two occasions, meeting with President Putin to discuss bilateral relations between India and Russia.
During the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan in October, Modi and Putin held discussions, while earlier talks also took place at the Eastern Economic Forum in Russia. Modi had extended an invitation to Putin to visit India during their October meeting.
A Strong Partnership
India and Russia share a long history of diplomatic ties dating back to the Cold War, and their relationship has remained robust despite external challenges.
Since Modi’s election in 2014, efforts have been made to rejuvenate the partnership, with Putin visiting India to strengthen their bilateral cooperation. This relationship continues to grow, with both countries aiming to boost their trade to over USD 100 billion by 2030.
This ambitious target was set during the 22nd Annual Bilateral Summit in Moscow earlier this year, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a "special and privileged strategic partnership." A comprehensive roadmap was also established, focusing on various key areas of cooperation.
One important initiative is using national currencies for trade, reducing reliance on third-party currencies and enhancing financial independence. Both nations are also looking to increase trade in agricultural products, food, and fertilizers, which are vital for mutual growth.
In addition, both countries are working to enhance logistical connectivity, including increasing cargo turnover through new trade routes like the North-South Transport Corridor. This project aims to improve the movement of goods, strengthening regional ties.
India’s Neutral Stance on Ukraine Conflict
Regarding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, India has maintained a neutral position. During his meeting with President Putin earlier this year, Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to peace, stating, “As I have said earlier, we believe that problems should be resolved peacefully. We fully support the early establishment of peace and stability. All our efforts prioritize humanity. India is ready to offer full cooperation in the times ahead.”
