legendary player and Padma Shri Charanjit Singh passes away

Una: Charanjit Singh, who was the captain of the Indian hockey team, has passed away tragically at the age of 92. He breathed his last on Thursday morning at his home in Una and passed away at 5 am. He had been ill for a few days. According to the information, Charanjit Singh lived in Maidi on Piranigah Road in Una district headquarters. He was born on February 3, 1931, in Una. Charanjit Singh was the captain of the 1964 Summer Olympics hockey team. Under his leadership, Team India won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964.

 

According to the information, Charanjit Singh completed his schooling from Gurdaspur and Lyallpur in Punjab, after which he studied BSE in Agriculture from Ludhiana and later he also held the post of Director of The Department of Physical Education at Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. At the school level, he started playing hockey. He joined the hockey team of Panjab University in the year 1949 and became the captain of the university team. In the year 1950, he was selected for the Indian hockey team. Charanjit Singh was included in team India that went to Pakistan in 1951 and 1955. Charanjit Singh was also a part of Team India, which toured Europe in 1959. Charanjit Singh was included in Team India for the Rome Olympics. But he could not play in the final match of this tournament. In 1961, he became the vice-captain of Team India. Under his leadership, the Indian men's hockey team won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

 

After which Charanjit Singh's state continued to shine year for years. In such a case, he was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1963. But after winning the Olympic gold medal in 1964, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the government. Along with this, he also received state-level and other honours. He was also a member and office-bearer of several departments and institutions in Himachal and Punjab.
