The pandemic period which reduced passenger service thereby suffering loss, the Salem Railway Division has loaded 2.08 million tonnes of freight and earned Rs 158 crore in freight revenue. Gautam Srinivas A, Divisional Railway Manager said, “The business development unit played a vital role in capturing new freight traffic like transportation of harvester machines and mosquito nets. The division surpassed the parcel earnings of last year and earned Rs 14 crore in the current financial year', during the republic day celebration. Salem division is an important junction point in Southern Railways, is always busiest. Railway Board with the sustained focus on increasing the freight business carried out by the Railways, Business Development Unit (BDU) was set up at Salem Division (Divisional level) over Southern Railway in the month of July 2020. Southern Railway freight transports raw materials and finished products which help the traders, businessmen and farmers. Indian Railways has launched Freight Business Development (FBD) Portal to render a one stop solution for freight/Parcel customers. The focus of these BDU units is to double the freight carried by Railways by 2024, with particular focus in strengthening Railways’ share in existing traffic parallel with the strongly foraying into miscellaneous non-bulk goods traffic. BDU members are in constant interaction with the existing and new customers so that focus is given equally to improve the freight traffic in both the segments. FDU portal has more than 4,000 registered customers of them 1300 were E-Payment Customers. Indian Railways has emerged as the most friendly mode of land transportation, especially for freight and cargo as Indian Railway with the recently introduced advance parcel booking and Time tabled trains, has ensured the most competitive means for transportation and timely delivery of cargo.
