Find out how Sarvepalli is associated with Radhakrishnan's name

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the first Vice President of Independent India, the second President, and veteran educationist Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888 in Tirutani, Tamil Nadu. Teacher's day is celebrated in his name and this is how he is remembered. He died on this day in 1975 due to prolonged illness. Today is his death anniversary to which many big luminaries pay tribute.

His ancestors lived in a village named 'Sarvepalli', who wished that his family members should use his birthplace name i.e. Sarvepalli before his name. This is also the reason for the name Sarvapalli being formed before his name.

He was married in 1903 at the age of 16 with a relationship sister named 'Sivakamu'. Sivakamu did not have a traditional education but had a good grasp of the Telugu language and could read and write English. He died on November 26, 1956.

He completed his two terms as the first Vice-President of India from 1952 to 1962. After this, from 1962 to 1967, he took over the reins of the country as the second President. Radhakrishnan also wrote books like Gautam Buddha, Life, and Philosophy, Religion and Society, India and World.

In 1954, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest honorary honor of the country, for his contribution to education and politics. Every year on 5 September, his birth anniversary is celebrated as Teachers' Day all over the country, and teachers are honored for their contribution.

In 1962 he was made a member of the 'British Academy'. Pope John Pal presented the 'Golden Spur'. He received the 'Order of Merit' award from the British Government.

He died on 17 April 1975 after a prolonged illness. Radhakrishnan was posthumously awarded the Templeton Prize by the US Government in 1975. This award is given for upliftment in the field of religion. He was the first non-Christian denomination to receive it.
