Markets continue to fall for third consecutive day, Sensex tumbles 587 points

MUMBAI: The country's stock markets recorded a sharp decline on Thursday. The sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange plunged 587.44 points to close at 36,472.93 and the Nifty tumbled 182.30 points to 10,736.40. The 30-share Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) opened at 37,087.58, a gain of 27.21 points, or 1.59 percent, at 36,472.93.

During the day, the Sensex touched an upper level of 37,087.58 and a low of 36,391.35. The BSE's midcap and smallcap index also dominated the decline. The BSE's midcap index lost 178.88 points to 13,080.60 and the SmallCap Index broke 270.89 points to close at 12,119.43. The Sensex at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) based on 50 stocks opened at 10,905.30 with a 13.4-point weakness and lost 182.30 points, or 1.67 percent, to close at 10,736.40.

During the day, the Nifty Fifty touched an upper level of 10,908.25 and a low of 10,718.30. One out of 19 sectors of the BSE - Information Technology (0.30 per cent) remained bullish. The main stocks in the declining sectors of the BSE were Realty (6.01 percent), Metals (3.49 percent), Finance (2.69 percent), Oil and Gas (2.63 percent) and Banking (2.52 percent).
