Indian share markets declined in trade for the fourth straight day ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve policy statement later tonight. The BSE Sensex ended 562 points lower at 49,801 while the NSE Nifty 50 index closed 189 points lower to end at 14,721. 48 out of the 50 Nifty constituents ended with losses. top losers in Nifty in today’s session include the names like ONGC, Bharat Petroleum, Tata Motors, Adani Ports and Coal India, whereas Top were ITC, Divis Labs, HDFC, Infosys and TCS. All sectoral indices ended with losses in today's session. The Nifty Bank index fell 1.6 percent or nearly 600 points to end at 34,229. The biggest sectoral laggard in today's session was the PSU Bank index, which fell nearly 4 percent. The Media index declined 3 percent while the Metal index fell 2.5 percent in today's session. Both Nifty Auto and Nifty Pharma ended with losses of close to 2 percent ahead of the weekly options expiry session tomorrow. Broader markets underperformed in today's session. The Nifty Midcap index fell 2.5 percent while the Smallcap index saw declines of 2.2 percent. 1,537 stocks on the NSE ended with losses in today's session while 377 stocks managed to post gains.
