Serum Institute to give covishield vaccine to Nepal and Tajikistan, Centre approves

New Delhi: The World's largest vaccine maker Serum Institute of India (SII) will soon start supplying corona vaccine covishield suo motu to other countries under the Cowax Global Immunization Programme. Recently, the Central Government has allowed the Serum Institute to export covishield vaccine supplements under the United Nations (UN) backed Cowax Global Immunization Programme. Under this program, 50 lakh doses of corona vaccine, covishield will be sent to Nepal, Tajikistan and Mozambique.

In addition to these three countries, the Serum Institute will also export the covishield vaccine to Bangladesh under the Cowax programme. SII will start exporting corona vaccine from today i.e. 23rd November under the Cowax programme. The first consignment of the covishield will be sent to Nepal. An official from serum institute told the media that the first consignment of the vaccine will leave Pune for Nepal today. However, delivery must have been delayed by two to three days for some reason.

In April this year, the Centre halted exports of corona virus vaccines, as the second wave in the country was at its peak. However, the second wave is now under control, in which case export of vaccines under the COVAX programme is also now being introduced.
