Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday has announced that his government will rename the "Ministry of Shipping" to "Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways". PM has announced was made after Modi inaugurated Ropax ferry services between Surat and Saurashtra in Gujarat to reduce the distance between Surat and Saurashtra from 317 km (by road) to just 60 kilometres, through video conferencing. The Modi government has already changed the name of Ministry of Human Resource and Development to the Ministry of Education under the New Education Policy 2020. The name change decision is a part of the government's efforts to transform the ports and create world-class Inland Water Transport. "The Ministry of Shipping encompasses within its fold shipping and ports sectors which include Shipbuilding and Ship-repair, Major Ports, National Waterways, and Inland Water Transport," the ministry writes in a blog published on its official website.
