Kolkata: Leader of opposition in the state assembly Shubhendu Adhikari staged a dharna inside the state election commission office on Sunday (December 19, 2021) to protest against the violence and widespread rigging during the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections in West Bengal. He alleged that he was assaulted by the Kolkata Police. Sharing a video of the incident on social media, Shubhendu said he and his associates were assaulted in front of the State Election Commission office. According to reports, Shubhendu led a delegation of BJP leaders and demanded re-polling in the civic body elections. The official said only 20 percent of voters have been able to cast their votes. More than 100 incidents of violence have taken place during the elections and large scale rigging has taken place. He accused the police commissioner of following the orders of his political boss. They must have been asked to suppress the voice of their subordinates and the opposition. Shubhendu wrote on Twitter, "Our protest will continue.” Shubhendu said, "We have met the West Bengal Election Commission and demanded re-polling. We want a forensic examination of the CCTV footage. Several BJP men have been assaulted during the elections. This is a major security lapse. In a video that went viral on social media, Shubhendu Adhikari can also be seen speaking with the officials inside the office.''
