Gangtok: The Sikkim government has announced a significant new initiative providing a 100% concession on bus fares for specific groups. This policy, effective immediately, offers free travel on both intra-state and inter-state bus services for persons with disabilities and women belonging to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category. Under this new policy, individuals with a disability of 40% or more can travel at no cost. To access this benefit, they must present a valid Unique Disability ID card issued by the central government, which certifies their level of disability. Women from the BPL category are also eligible for free bus travel. They need to show a BPL certificate issued by the Directorate of Economics, Statistics, Monitoring, and Evaluation (DESME) to claim the concession. The state transport department’s announcement reflects Sikkim’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups and enhancing accessibility across its transportation network. This move aims to alleviate financial burdens for those who are most in need, ensuring they have greater mobility and access to essential services.
