Slain Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh buried in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM: Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian-American journalist killed in the West Bank while covering riots, was buried in Jerusalem.

As per reports, thousands of Palestinians attended the burial on Friday, which began with a church ceremony in east Jerusalem in the morning. Last tributes were given in the Old City, where she was laid to rest in a nearby cemetery, according to her employer Al Jazeera TV.

Abu Akleh, 51, was shot by Israeli troops in the northern West Bank city of Jenin on Wednesday morning while covering a raid, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Al Jazeera officials also accused Israel of killing the experienced journalist on purpose, despite Israeli authorities first claiming she was killed by indiscriminate gunfire from Palestinian militants.

The Israeli military also released preliminary findings of its investigation on Friday, claiming that shooting was strong in the area of Abu Akleh and her team during the event, and that "it is not possible to establish the source of the gunfire which hit and killed" her. "A number of elements requiring further clarification remained at the end of the initial investigation," the military noted.
