Sri Lanka reports 600 new cases, surpasses 50,000 mark

Colombo: Sri Lanka is currently facing a second wave of the corona pandemic with three parliamentarians, including one cabinet minister, being infected with the virus in the past days. Sri Lanka reported 600 new corona cases in past 24 hours. With the addition of news cases, the total has surpassed the 50,000-mark.

According to the statistics from the country's Health Ministry, out of the total 50,229 positive patients, 43,267 patients had recovered and been discharged from hospitals, bringing down the active patient count to 6,715. A total of 247 deaths have been reported from the virus in Srilanka.

Talking about global corona cases, covid-19 cases rise unabated across the globe, with nearly 93 million infected by the deadly contagion. While 66,276,239 have recovered, 1,968,544 have died so far. The US remains the worst-hit country with 23,614,679, followed by India, Brazil, Russia and the United Kingdom.
