CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin requested personal intervention from External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday to secure the release of Indian fishermen detained by Indonesian and Seychelles authorities.

five fishermen from Tamil Nadu and Kerala were detained by Indonesian air and sea police for allegedly invading Indonesian waters and transferred to Ditpolairud Pier in Aceh, Indonesia, for legal processes, according to Stalin in a letter to Jaishankar. On February 17, the fishermen went fishing in an Andaman-registered fishing vessel.

Stalin said that on February 22, 33 fishermen and three mechanised fishing boats left Cochin harbour, according to fishermen groups. Seychelles authorities seized the fishermen on March 7 for allegedly entering Seychelles waters.
