New Delhi: The country's largest court has sought answers from state governments for installing CCTV cameras in police stations and videography of witnesses' statements. The court has given time till January to all state governments to file affidavits. The detailed guidelines of the apex court can come by this evening. Earlier on November 24, the Supreme Court reserved order in a case related to the installation of CCTV cameras in police stations across the country. Justice Rohinton F. A bench of Nariman, Justice KM Joseph and Justice Anirudh Bose directed senior counsel Siddharth Dave, amicus curiae to submit a comprehensive note by Friday on the question of preserving and collecting more than 45 days of CCTV footage. In 2018, the Supreme Court had directed to install CCTV in every police station in the country to deal with the growing custody torture case. In this case, on 16 September 2020, the top court sought information on the status of CCTV cameras in the police station. The Supreme Court had asked the Chief Secretaries of all the states to reply in this regard by 24 November.
