New Delhi: The Central government has deposited Rs 10 crore paid by the Italian government in the apex court as compensation to the families of two Kerala fishermen. The fishermen were killed by two Italian marines near the Kerala beach in February 2012. The Supreme Court is hearing the central government's application to close the case against the two Italian marines- Salvatore Girone and Masimiliano Latore. In fact, the central government had appealed to the apex court to close the ongoing case against the two Italian soldiers, but the victim's counsel said the court should not close the case until the full compensation amount is received. The Supreme Court had on April 9 directed the Central government to deposit Rs 10 crore for the families of the two Indian fishermen on behalf of Italy in its account, which itself would give compensation to their families. The central government had told a three-member bench of the apex court chief justice S A Bobde, Justice A S Bopanna and Justice V Ramasubramanian that as soon as the compensation amount is received, the government will deposit it in the court as directed on April 9. SG Tushar Mohta told the court on Friday that a compensation of Rs 10 crore has been fixed by the International Tribunal, which was accepted by the Central Government with the consent of the Kerala government. This amount has been deposited in the registry.
