New Delhi: The central government has placed before the Supreme Court the file for the appointment of Election Commissioner Arun Goyal. After going through this file, the Supreme Court has questioned whether this process of appointment has been completed in haste. Earlier on Wednesday, the apex court had summoned the file of election commissioner Arun Goyal from the Central government. The court had said that when the petitions seeking improvement in the appointment process of election commissioners are being heard, why did Arun Goyal get the appointment? On this, the central government's lawyer had also opposed it, but the apex court had said that if there is nothing wrong with the appointment process, then what is the matter of concern? At present, the Supreme Court has reserved the verdict in this case. The petitions had demanded that an independent panel should be set up to appoint election commissioners without interference from the government. In fact, the Supreme Court has been hearing petitions seeking reforms in the appointment of election commissioners and ending government interference for the last 3 days. On Tuesday, the court raised questions on the appointment of election commissioners. A bench headed by Justice KM Joseph had said that how can the Election Commission take action against the Prime Minister, who has been appointed by the government. Not only this but it was also suggested to constitute a committee with the membership of the Chief Justice in the selection of election commissioners.
