Mumbai: A petition filed by the Maharashtra government and former state home minister Anil Deshmukh was dismissed by the Supreme Court on Thursday. The petition was filed against the Bombay High Court's April 5 verdict in which the court had ordered a preliminary inquiry against Deshmukh. The court passed the order on corruption charges leveled against Deshmukh by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh. While hearing the case, Supreme Court Justice SK Kaul said that the allegations leveled against Anil Deshmukh are very serious and the Home Minister and the Commissioner of Police are involved. The two continued to work closely together until the two parted ways and had a prestigious position. He questioned whether CBI should not investigate it. He said there should be a trend of allegations and an impartial inquiry into those involved. Justice Kaul, meanwhile, said, "The man was not your (Anil Deshmukh's) enemy who accused you. Rather, this was done by the man who was your right hand (Param Bir Singh).'' Judge SK Kaul further said, "An inquiry should be conducted against both of them.'' On the other hand, advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing before the court on behalf of Anil Deshmukh, said that no preliminary inquiry can be conducted without hearing Anil Deshmukh's side.
