Supreme Court revokes Life Ban Imposed On Cricketer Sreesanth

The Supreme Court on Friday revoked the life ban on former Indian cricketer S. Sreesanth in a case of spot-fixing and asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to re-examine its quantum of punishment. Apex Court has directed the disciplinary committee of BCCI to take a decision on the quantum of punishment within 3 months from today.

A Bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and K.M. Joseph provided a huge relief for the cricketer, saying the life ban is “too harsh.” The court asked the BCCI disciplinary committee to review the quantum of his punishment in three months. It has, however, upheld his indictment in the wake of the 2013 IPL spot fixing scandal.

Court made it clear that the order shall have no effect on criminal proceedings pending against the former cricketer. The court said the standard of disciplinary proceedings was higher than that of criminal proceedings.

Sreesanth had earlier argued how the life ban given to other cricketers was reconsidered eventually.

It was on March 1 that the bench reserved judgment on Sreesanth's appeal against the judgment of the High Court of Kerala, which had affirmed the life ban imposed by BCCI. In August 2017, a single-judge bench of the Kerala High Court had lifted the life ban imposed on Sreesanth by BCCI and had set aside all proceedings against him initiated by the board. Within two months, a division bench of the high court restored the ban allowing appeal filed by the BCCI against the single-judge bench's order.
