New Delhi: The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Center and all the state governments seeking a response to the petition of social activist Seema Girija. The court has summoned the reply in four weeks. The petition has sought the setting up of a district-level committee to implement and enforce the Persons with Disabilities Act, to enforce the rights to live with dignity of persons with disabilities. Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud said that this is a very important matter. Counsel for the petitioner has submitted that all the states are not required to issue notices. Only 10 states have special departments, only 12 states have independent directors, and 4 states don't even have rules. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has said that we can direct the ministry and ask them to hold a meeting with the defaulting states. The CJI bench ordered that the petitioner is a member of a forum for parents, professionals, and other stakeholders dealing with the rights of children with disabilities. The petitioner has emphasized that the provisions of the RPWD Act 2016 have not been implemented by the States.
