Rajiv Gandhi assassination: SC slams Tamil Nadu governor over pendency in mercy petition

New Delhi: The mercy petition of Rajiv Gandhi murder convict AG Perarivalan has been pending with the Governor of Tamil Nadu for more than two years. Now, SC has expressed its displeasure on the governor on Tuesday. A bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao has asked the Tamil Nadu government to recommend to the state governor that the governor take his decision immediately on the earlier recommendation.

The apex court said that 'we do not want to exercise jurisdiction. But we are not happy that this recommendation has been pending with the Governor for 2 years. Tell us what the law and matters are. The apex court told the government that 'look at the Shatrughna Chauhan verdict, do some research and tell us.' The court asked the Tamil Nadu government why the governor is taking so long? Can't you tell them? '

Additional Advocate of Tamil Nadu Balaji Srinivasan told the court that, 'the Governor cannot take a decision without receiving the report of the multi-disciplinary monitoring agency which is seen as a' big conspiracy '' behind the case. Srinivasan further said, 'This is a big conspiracy case, the CBI has to submit a report on this big conspiracy to the Governor. Till the report is not submitted, it is difficult to come to a decision.
