New Delhi: Supreme Court has recognized the authority of the royal family of Travancore in the management of the famous Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Kerala. After hearing the matter on Monday, the court gave the verdict has given the responsibility of arranging and maintaining the temple to the committee headed by the District Judge of Thiruvananthapuram. It is noteworthy that the management and administration dispute was pending for the last nine years in the apex court regarding the economic disturbances at Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The decision of the Kerala High Court was challenged by the former royal family of Travancore in the apex court. The temple has assets worth around two lakh crores. In the 18th century, the Travancore royal family renovated this magnificent temple of Lord Padmanabha (Vishnu). The royal family ruled southern Kerala and some areas of adjoining Tamil Nadu before merging with the Indian Union in 1947. Even after independence, the temple continued to be operated by a trust controlled by the erstwhile royal family, whose deity is Lord Padmanabha. The Bench of Judge UU Lalit and Judge Indu Malhotra in the apex court reserved its verdict on the petitions challenging the January 31, 2011 judgment of the Kerala High Court in the case on 10 April last year. The High Court had asked the state government to form a body or trust to manage the temple, its properties and to operate the temple in accordance with the conventions.
