Filmmaker Swapna Patkar has been detained on Tuesday on charges of cheating and forgery for allegedly obtaining a fake PhD degree in clinical physiology and for using it to get a job in a hospital here. This information was given by a police officer. Patkar (39) is known for producing marathi movie 'Balakadu', a biopic of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray, which was released in 2015. The official said he has been taken into custody after an FIR was registered against her under Sections 419 (cheating by disguise), 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery) and 468 (forgery for fraudulent purposes) of IPC at Bandra police station in suburban Mumbai on May 26. He said he has been practising as a clinical psychologist at a major hospital in Bandra (West) since 2016. The official said 51-year-old social activist Gurdeep Kaur Singh had lodged a police complaint in April after obtaining a set of documents relating to Patkar's PHD degree in a sealed envelope from an anonymous source. He said that as per the documents, patkar's certificate PHD issued by Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj College, Kanpur in 2009 was actually fake. The official said Patkar managed to get an honorary adviser in the hospital using the alleged fake degree and treated people with mental health problems. He said singh approached bandra police on May 26 with a complaint against Patkar. He said further investigation is underway in the matter.
