Taliban appoint Former-cricketer Mirwais Ashraf as acting ACB chief

KABUL: Afghanistan's Taliban-led government has appointed Mirwais Ashraf, a former cricket all-rounder, as acting chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB). Mirwais will take over the board from Azizullah Fazli, who has been in charge for the past two months. According to a Taliban statement, "the Prime Minister of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has appointed Mirwais Ashraf as acting chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB)."

According to reports, the decision was made after several national cricket team players made repeated demands during a meeting with Taliban officials in Abu Dhabi during the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup. Following the withdrawal of US and NATO forces, the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, toppling the Ashraf Ghani regime.

Since the Taliban forbade women from participating in any sport, including cricket, Afghan cricket has been seriously considered for a complete ban in the past. Afghanistan's men's cricket team was eliminated from the Twenty20 World Cup 12 stage after losing to Pakistan, India, and New Zealand, and only winning two of their five matches.
