Tamil Nadu Governor forwarded anti-NEET bill to the President for assent: Stalin

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said on Wednesday that the Tamil Nadu Assembly Bill, which seeks to exempt the state from the National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test (NEET), has been sent to the Centre for presidential assent by Governor R N Ravi.

Stalin told the state legislature that the Governor's secretary informed him that the bill had been sent to the Union Home Ministry for President Ram Nath Kovind's approval. "As part of our fight for NEET exemption, we should join forces in the next step to press the Centre for presidential assent to the Bill," he said.

After the Governor had returned the one resolved last year, the parliament accepted the ruling DMK-piloted anti-NEET Bill for the second time in February. The Chief Minister recalled the numerous steps he took in pursuing NEET exemption and claimed his government attended an all-party meeting and reviewed the subject soon after the Governor returned the Bill, claiming that his government's relentless efforts led to the current development. The Assembly passed the bill, which was then transmitted to the Governor to be forwarded to the President for his assent.

He raised the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in addition to personally calling the Governor and pressing him to forward the Bill to the Centre. Stalin recalled that an all-party MP delegation met with the President and submitted a memorandum in this regard. "As part of these efforts, the Governor has forwarded the Bill to the Union Home Ministry for presidential assent, in a historic move," the Chief Minister said.
