Tata’s CM Chandrasekaran meets PM ahead of official handover of Air India

NEW DELHI: N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, who controls the whole Tata Company, paid a visit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Thursday ahead of the official handover of Air India, which the Tata group won on October 8, 2021, beating out SpiceJet.

With a bid of Rs 18,000 crore, Tata won the contract and resurrected Air India after 69 years. In aviation lingo, this meeting represents the ultimate call that Air India is no longer a government of India operation and has become a private entity.

The meeting took place after Air India handed over its balance sheet to Talace, a Tata Sons aviation unit that would oversee Air India, Air express, and Air India's ground handling service till January 20, 2022. The Tata Group executives evaluated the balance sheet and had until January 24 to request any corrections. After that, the government of India will take over Air India, Air Express, and its ground handling service to Tata Group, completing the government's 100% disinvestment in Air India.

From January 27, the Tata group has announced a 'improved meal service' on four Air India flights: AI864 Mumbai-Delhi, AI687 Mumbai-Delhi, AI945 Mumbai-Abu Dhabi, and AI639 Mumbai-Bengaluru. In a staggered manner, this will be expanded to other flights and routes.
