TCS Faces Challenge as 80,000 Posts Remain Unfilled Due to Skills Gap, What's Next?

Indian IT giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is currently grappling with a significant challenge as it struggles to fill 80,000 open positions due to a notable skills gap, the report read. During a recent town hall, Amar Shetye, the global operations head of TCS's Resource Management Group (RMG), disclosed that the company is facing a shortage of skilled employees, resulting in a reliance on contractors to bridge these gaps.

TCS is not alone in facing workforce challenges. Several other Indian IT majors, including Wipro, have also delayed onboarding freshers, leaving many without confirmed joining dates. According to the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), over 10,000 freshers have been affected by these delays over the past two years.

Wipro's Chief Human Resources Officer, Saurabh Govil, acknowledged during a recent earnings call that the company has been unable to fulfill campus offers made two years ago. "The year before last, we visited campuses and made numerous offers. We are yet to honor those commitments. Once we complete those offers, we will proceed with new fresher hires," Govil stated.

In the financial year ending in March, the combined headcount of TCS, Infosys, and Wipro decreased by nearly 64,000, reflecting a period of over-hiring during the pandemic, followed by a shift towards productivity improvements without a corresponding increase in headcount. Ashwin Yardi, CEO of Capgemini India, indicated that their campus hiring for the current year would be moderated, with last year's intake comprising approximately 30,000 freshers.

The situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by India's IT industry in aligning workforce skills with industry demands, highlighting the need for strategic planning and investment in training to bridge the skills gap.
