Telecommunication Commission may Start mobile tower project in northeast states soon

The inter-ministerial body Telecommunication Commission can consider the proposal to set up a mobile tower in the villages of the Northeast, through the telecommunications network of the North Eastern Region.

"The telecom connectivity scheme will be placed before the Telecom Commission on September 8, for improvement in mobile connectivity in the North-Eastern region."

The mobile tower will be set up under the comprehensive telecom development scheme for the North East region. This plan was approved by the Cabinet in 2014.

Under the scheme, 6,673 mobile towers covering 8,621 villages of 9,190 villages cut off from the telecom network. An estimated cost of Rs 5,336.18 crore will be spent on this. The Universal Service Obligation Fund (USFO), looking after the project, can bid for 4,000 out of 6,673 mobile towers.

Public sector BSNL has been given the responsibility of setting up a network in the remote areas of Arunachal Pradesh and two districts of Assam, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasau.

Public sector telecom company Vihen Network Ltd. And HFCL has deposited the bid received for setting up 2,000 towers of Rs. 1,648 crore. These two domestic companies, which made telecom equipment, had set up a mobile network project for BSNL in different areas of nine states affected by Naxal violence.

The remaining project will be implemented with the help of private telecom operators. There was no response from private telecom companies for the tender. Ultimately, USOF has got a speech from Indian Airtel this year. Airtel has bid for Rs 1,660 crore to install 2,000 towers.

According to sources, the USOF has already postponed plans to install mobile towers in Meghalaya. This project will be done through separate tender. Telecom Commission has to decide the price difference between the two bids and the validity of the MGI only bid from Bharti Airtel.
