Acclaimed Telugu TV host and actress Jhansi offered her thoughts on women's fundamental rights and religious beliefs during the countrywide outrage following the Karnataka Hijab debate. "Don't forget when you utilise the "HIJAB" argument as a religious statement, you are undermining women's right to freedom," Jhansi said in a recent Instagram story. Hijab has enabled millions of women the freedom to leave their homes, go to school, and job. Women's fundamental rights are above religious beliefs #secular #rightofreligion In yet another note, Jhansi also shared her thoughts on expression of one's own religion as well. She wrote, "You have the right of expression of your own religion. You are free to wear a Tilak, dhoti / saree , rudraksh Mala to your work or school These expressions are not mandatory for majority freedom. Religious ideas (sic) should not be confused with women's fundamental rights." After demonstrations erupted in reaction to several educational institutions in the state refusing to admit students wearing hijab, schools and colleges in Karnataka have been closed for three days as of Wednesday. Muskaan Khan, a burka-clad student at PES Campus of Arts, Science, and Commerce in Mandya, was heckled by the audience on the college grounds for wearing the burka. She approached the throng, yelling "Allah-hu-Akbar" while hundreds of students tracked her down and hoisted "Jai Sriram" slogans. On social media, the video has gone viral.
