Tharoor not expecting votes from senior leaders, but from ordinary workers

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As the campaign for the Congress Presidential post-campaign is picking up momentum, with the peers candidates all embarking on a canvassing trip to many states, India's most popular and intelligent Dr. Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday said that he is not expecting the votes from senior leaders.

He told the local media during a press conference that he did not anticipate support from his party's top officials. After visiting two states, Tharoor remarked, "I am anticipating support from the regular voters and that's the push I am receiving from the calls I am getting."

However, he emphasised that certain important figures, such Thampanoor Ravi (Kerala), Saifuddin Soz, and Mohsina Kidwai, have shown their support.

He  also expressed his disgust with the manner some of the party's top officials supported Malikarjuna Kharge, who is considered the "official" candidate and is running against Tharoor.

K. Sudhakaran, the president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, who had previously urged voters to vote in accordance with their justifications, released a statement on Monday applauding Kharge.

Maybe his statement is just his personal opinion, Tharoor said.

"There is a rule that says party officials shouldn't hold office. The Central Election Authorities need to look into this, and I hope they will "Tharoor said, adding that there was not much time left and that he was anticipating receiving the voter contact information on Wednesday.

Tharoor further emphasised that since it is a secret ballot, no one would know who cast a vote for whom. He also stated that his candidacy is intended to help the party gain support from the general public as well as Congressmen.
