New Delhi: The Modi government at the Centre has appointed a new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). The government has appointed Lt Gen (Retd) Anil Chauhan as the new CDS. He will also serve as Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, Government of India. General (Retd) Anil Chauhan's entry into the army was from the Gorkha Rifles. He was also involved in the planning of the Balakot strike in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) and retired last year. In a career spanning over 40 years, Lt Gen (Retd) Anil Chauhan has made several command, staff and support appointments. He has tremendous experience in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and North-East India. After the death of former CDS General Bipin Rawat in a helicopter crash, the churning was going on on the appointment of the new CDS. Today the central government stamped it. For the appointment of new CDS, the central government was brainstorming on the names of both serving and retired military officers. The post was lying vacant after the death of the country's first CDS General Bipin Rawat in a helicopter crash on December 8 last year. In 2019, the decision to appoint new CDSs within six months of the BJP forming the government again at the Centre under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi was described as the biggest reform in the country's highest military structure.
