A Politician, an orator, an influencer, Somnath Chatterjee was one of the finest personalities of the Indian politics. His loss is indeed sad. We may say, India has actually gone poorer now. Chatterjee closed his eyes at Kolkata hospital after a minor heart attack. Somnath Chatterjee joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) in the year 1968 and served as its member till 2008. Post the death of his father, in the year 1971, he was nominated for the interim election. As a result of the elections, he was elected from the constituency, concerned. Therefore, it was in the year 1971, that he became the Lok Sabha member. Also, he was the supported by the CPI as their independent candidate. You would be surprised to know that Chatterjee was elected nine times in the elections, post which he lost the elections against Mamta Banerjee. Their constituency was Jadavpur, in the year 1984. He represented his party in Loksabha for a period of 15 years, i.e. from 1989 until 2004. From Bolpur, he was elected for the tenth time as a member of the 14th Lok Sabha, in the year 2004. Post the 2004 election, he became the pro tem speaker and successively, he was elected as the Speaker of the Upper house on 4 June 2004. He shall always be remembered for his impactful personality and good deeds.
