When it is festive time around fourteen Irular families living in Anjanchery village of Gingee has celebrated their really light of happiness. For ages these people had always waited and fighted strong ever, the settlement has received power connections.

“After living with oil lamps all these years, we finally have electricity in our homes,” says sexagenarian V Valli. These people had made this possible through an creative initiative of an organization called STEPS. The key idea was to use solar power as source light. This great organization has lit up 50 tribal homes with solar power with in a span of six months. “Though I am visually impaired and cannot see, I am very excited for my villagers,” says 19-year-old Madhavan who resides there.

The great minds of STEPS had first installed lights in a settlement at Jakkampettai, along the Tiruchy - Chennai highway at Tindivanam. The members of community had submitted the petitions seeking land patta for the members of the community to officials, says Rajesh, who is one of the founder of STEPS.
