New Delhi: The law to unify the three municipal corporations of the national capital has now got the assent of President Ram Nath Kovind. The law has already been passed in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. It is also being considered a step toward MCD elections. The elections were scheduled to be held in March, which was postponed for the time being.
As soon as the Delhi Municipal Corporation Integration Bill got the assent of President Ram Nath Kovind, the bill for the unification of corporations became law with immediate effect i.e. now the capital will have not the South, East, North Delhi Municipal Corporation but only the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Jagdish Mamgai, who is in the unified municipal corporation, says, "Now there will be a process of delimitation and then after that, the elections to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will be held.''
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (Amendment) Bill 2022 was passed in the budget session in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, which has now received the assent of President Ram Nath Kovind and now the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will have only one commissioner instead of three mayors and three commissioners. In 2011, the Delhi Assembly divided the Municipal Corporation of Delhi into three parts to make north-south and east Delhi. However, in order to improve the financial condition of the poor corporation, the central government had decided to unite the three corporations. That's why the bill of integration came.
