Third-party insurance for vehicles mandatory: Supreme Court

Concerned over the rising road accidents, the Supreme Court has said that it is mandatory to make third-party insurance of two and four wheelers on Friday. The Supreme Court said that due to this the accident victims will get some compensation. The court also told the insurance companies and the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRDA) that three people are dying every minute in the country, in this case, it should look at the human perspective rather than the commercial.

The Supreme Court, who is hearing a PIL on Rajasikaran's plea, said this when Justice Mitra kept the report of the committee headed by former Justice KS Radhakrishnan on Road Safety and demanded third-party insurance mandatory. The Radhakrishnan Committee, formed on April 22, 2014, from the Supreme Court, had said in the report that more than one lakh people are dying in road accidents every year and they can not get any compensation.

In November, the Supreme Court had ordered the creation of Trauma Center in the matter, during November last year, all states and Union Territories had ordered to make Trauma Centers in every district and to include road safety rules in the school curriculum.

The report of the committee included:

More than 18 crores vehicles running on the Indian roads  06 crores vehicles have third party insurance  In the road accident, the victim gets third party insurance of the vehicle with no compensation. 05 years Third Party Insurance is to be given at the time of the sale of two-wheeler vehicle Recommendation  Third party insurance is said to be done at the time of the sale of four wheelers.
