Thiruvananthapuram Airport Closed For 5-hrs For Alpasi Arattu procession

KERALA: The Thiruvananthapuram international airport in Kerala is prepared to once more shut down its runway and suspend aircraft operations on Tuesday afternoon for five hours to ensure the smooth passage of the Alpasi Arattu procession of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple.

The airport in Thiruvananthapuram was traversed by the procession. The airport remained closed for a total of 5 hours in order to ensure the orderly flow of the procession of God.

For decades, the airport has had to halt operations and reschedule flights twice a year to make room for the famous Padmanabha Swamy temple's bi-annual, centuries-old ceremonial procession to pass down the runway. The airport officials in this area have notified travellers that flights would not operate from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday due to one of the temple's "Aaratu" processions, which symbolises the festival's conclusion.

Even after the Adani Group assumed control of the airport's management last year, the custom of closing the airport for the ritualistic procession has been carried out without fail

Flight services will be suspended on November 1, 2022, from 1600 to 2100 hours in order to enable and facilitate the smooth continuation of a centuries-old ritual by the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple for the Alpassi Arattu procession through the runway of the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, according to a statement from the airport management.

Services both domestically and internationally during this time have been postponed.

According to an airport source, at least 10 planes have already been changed to accommodate the ritualist procession.
