The independence was secured through the London and Zürich Agreements, with guarantees provided by Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.
The day is filled with vibrant celebrations, particularly in the capital city of Nicosia. Festivities include a grand military parade featuring units from the National Guard, Greek forces stationed in Cyprus, as well as local police and fire services. This struggle lasted four years and ultimately led to significant political negotiations.
However, instead of the anticipated unification with Greece, Cyprus was declared an independent republic. This decision was heavily influenced by the Turkish minority, who opposed becoming an even smaller minority under Greek rule.
