This IIT Madras Professor Earns Prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award

CHENNAI: In a remarkable achievement, Professor Rajnish Kumar from the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has been honored with the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for his remarkable contributions to the realm of science and technology. This esteemed accolade is bestowed upon individuals who have made exceptional strides in advancing human knowledge and fostering progress.

Professor Kumar's remarkable accomplishments center around his profound insights into the intricate processes of nucleation and growth of clathrate hydrates, as well as his groundbreaking work on CO2 sequestration within solid hydrates and methane recovery from marine gas hydrates.

This coveted annual award has been instituted by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research since 1985, bearing the name of the organization's founder-director, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar.

V. Kamakoti, the director of IIT-Madras, lauded Professor Kumar's exceptional dedication to research, stating that the award is a testament to his remarkable contributions. Professor Kumar has been an integral part of the Department of Chemical Engineering for over a decade, amassing a wealth of experience in the field of research. Expressing his gratitude, he humbly accepted the award in the field of engineering sciences. He was quick to attribute his success to the hard work and dedication of numerous students who have diligently pursued their theses under his guidance, both at IIT Madras and CSIR-NCL, Pune.

The research group led by Professor Kumar boasts an impressive portfolio, with nearly 140 research articles, book chapters, and patents to their credit. Additionally, Professor Kumar holds the prestigious title of Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry [FRSC] in the United Kingdom, further cementing his reputation as a trailblazer in the field of scientific research.
