New Delhi: The polio vaccination campaign, which begins on January 17 this year, will now begin on January 31. The central government has said that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has decided to reschedule the polio vaccination day on 31st January 2021. National Immunization Day begins with President Ram Nath Kovind will administer polio drops to children at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 30.
Earlier on Wednesday, the central government had deferred the polio vaccination programme to further orders due to 'unforeseen activities'. Under this programme, children of 0-5 years are given two drops of vaccine for immunity from polio across the country. National Immunization Day is commonly known as pulse polio immunization programme. The Union Health Ministry had informed all the States on the postponement of the programme through a letter on 9th January.
Earlier, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Harsh Vardhan said on January 8 that we are going to start the National Immunization Programme against polio from 17th January. It will last for two-three days. The children who are exempted from vaccination will also be identified and vaccinated. This vaccination is very essential for maintaining the level of immunization at the national level against the poliovirus.
