Tribal society's movement against conversion in MP

Bhopal: Tribe Garjana De-listing Maharally was organized on behalf of Tribe Suraksha Manch at Bhel Dahshara Maidan in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. People from the tribal community from 40 districts across the state participated in the Maharally organized on February 10, 2023. The protestors are demanding the De-listing of people from the tribal community who convert. He says that even after giving up their culture and worship, people are getting government schemes and other benefits available to the tribal community. In such a situation, the de-listing of those who convert is necessary. During this, the people present there also raised slogans 'Who is not of Bholenath, he is not of my caste'.

According to the report, the protesting people say that the way the de-listing of Scheduled Castes has been implemented in Article 341, similarly de-listing should be implemented by amending Article 342. According to the amendment made in Article 341, if a member of a Scheduled Caste (SC) converts to Christian or Muslim religion, then he stops getting the facilities available to the people of the SC community. Tribal organizations want this amendment in Article 342 so that if a person from a tribal community changes his religion, he cannot get the government benefits that the community gets.

Kalu Singh Mujalda, a member of 'Janjati Suraksha Manch' while talking to the journalists said that the campaign will continue till the demand is fulfilled. He says that the one who changes his method of worship by sacrificing the tribal culture cannot take advantage of the tribal community. He said that the sentiments of the Constitution are being ignored in matters of jobs, scholarships, and government grants. Kailash Ninama, a member leader of the Manch, says that the Parliament has not yet been able to enact a law to amend Article 342. He said that its draft is pending in the Parliament since the 1970s.

Kailash Ninama said that after changing religion, a person from the tribal community is called a Christian. After this, according to the law, he comes under the category of the minority. In the absence of clear provisions for post-conversion in Articles 341 and 342 of the Constitution, the converted people are taking advantage of double facilities. Kailash also said that de-listing is not only a matter related to schemes and benefits of reservation, but it is a matter related to self-respect, preservation of culture, and the existence of tribal society.
