NEW DELHI: In the US, 33 percent of TikTok users routinely obtain their news from the short-form video app, up from 22 percent in 2020. The Chinese short-form video app is now a major news source for its consumers. As other major social media platforms experience a reduction in regular news consumption on their platforms, TikTok is growing as a daily news source. According to a recent Pew Research Center research, only 44 percent of Facebook users receive regular news updates, down from 54 percent two years ago. However, Facebook continues to outperform all other social media platforms in terms of overall metrics when it comes to where Americans typically get news on social media. 31 percent of US adults claim to routinely acquire their news from Facebook. A quarter of US adults routinely access YouTube for news, whereas lesser percentages access Twitter (14 percent), Instagram (13 percent), TikTok (10 percent), or Reddit for news (8 %). Only 4 percent of Americans frequently use LinkedIn, 4 percent use Snapchat, 4 percent use WhatsApp, and 3 percent use Twitch (1 %). According to a survey published late on Tuesday, there are frequent demographic discrepancies among the users of each social media platform who frequently turn to it for news. According to the Pew study, "adults under 30 make up the highest share of those who routinely get news on the site on several of the social networking sites we asked about." For instance, at least 50 percent of regular news users on Reddit (50 percent) and TikTok (52 percent) are between the ages of 18 and 29. Additionally, compared to Twitter and Reddit, Facebook has a higher proportion of women among regular news consumers.
